The architectural décor of Ak-Kula racecourse (1947) (article)

The Ak-Kula racecourse’s complex, situated in south-western part of the city of Bishkek, was built in 1947 after the project of Vladimir Efimovich Nusov, a Honoured Architect of Kirghiz SSR, historian of architecture and pedagogue. Except the racecourse, another interesting buildings by V.Е.Nusov of Soviet period are library named after N. G. Chernyshevsky; agriculture ministry of the Kirghiz SSR; the pioneers’palace in the capital and pedagogical institute in the city of Osh. The outstanding architect is also known by his important scientific works such as «Architecture of Kirghizia from the ancient times to the present» (1971) and«Modern architecture of Kirghizia» (1982).

The racecourse’s complex, projected in the style of neoclassicism, combined harmoniously traditions of the Antique and Central Asian architecture. In the architectural decor of Ak-Kula racecourse the architect used wide motives of Kyrgyz ornament (gul, muiuz, toguz dobo, etc.), which gave bright national traits to the complex. Оrnamental motives were fulfilled in the technique of casting of alabaster and chasing of metal.

Renowned traditions in history of development of Kyrgyzstan’s horse sport were related with Ak-Kula racecourse. In Soviet period and in the years of independence running with two-wheeled carriage, national games of baige, oodarysh and kyz-kuumai took place in the racecourse’s field. The racecourse was struck off from the list of republican architectural monuments and then it was pulled down in November of 2024 on the pretext of its emergency condition.
